What I do and when
Short, warm, civil ceremonies. The courthouse experience without the courthouse queue. Two people, a witness where the license requires one, and the paperwork handled properly at the end.
The ceremony is the part people remember. The license is the part that actually makes you married, and it is the part that gets fumbled: wrong date, wrong county, missing witness signature, returned late. I handle that half.
Before the ceremony
- Obtain your marriage license from the county clerk (Orange County issues them; California licenses are valid statewide for 90 days)
- Bring the license itself to the ceremony. I cannot solemnize without it
- Know whether yours is a public license (requires one witness) or a confidential license (no witness required)
- Bring photo ID for both parties

How far in advance should we book?
For a weekend date, a few weeks. For a weekday elopement, often within the same week. The license has to be in hand before the ceremony either way.
Do we need witnesses?
A public marriage license requires one witness to sign. A confidential license does not. Check which one the county issued you. People frequently do not know, and it changes who needs to be in the room.
Who files the license afterward?
I complete and return the license to the issuing county within the required timeframe. You will want a certified copy afterward for name changes and immigration purposes. if it is going abroad, that is when the apostille conversation starts.
