Why ink cards still exist

Live Scan works only for California agencies that are set up to receive the results electronically. The moment your background check is going to the FBI directly, to another state, to a foreign government, or to a federal agency, you need physical ink on an FD-258 card that gets mailed in.

That is why people end up here after being turned away from a Live Scan counter. If the agency mailed you a blank card, ink is what they want.

Clean, quick, convenient

  • Clean. Professional ink-rolled fingerprints, done carefully enough to avoid a rejection
  • Quick. Efficient service with attention to the card details, which is where most rejections come from
  • Convenient. I travel to you, at a time that fits around work

Have this ready

  • A current government-issued photo ID
  • The blank card the agency sent you, if they sent one
  • The agency's ORI number or mailing instructions, if you have them
  • Clean, dry hands. No lotion or hand sanitizer beforehand

Lotion is the single most common reason a roll comes out unusable. Skip it on the day and the whole appointment goes faster. Most agencies want two cards, and a spare saves a second trip if one is rejected.

Fingerprints headed overseas

If your FBI background check is going to another country, the order matters and getting it wrong costs weeks. The card is rolled, the FBI issues the Identity History Summary, and that federal document is then apostilled through the U.S. Department of State. Not through California.

I handle both halves, so you are not coordinating between a fingerprint shop and an apostille service that blame each other when the timeline slips.

FAQ

Fingerprinting. Common questions

Where do fingerprint appointments happen?

For one or two people, I prefer to meet at a neutral public or professional venue, and I can meet you in office if that suits you better. For real estate schools, training programs, and group bookings, I travel out to you.

Do group and school bookings work differently?

Yes. When I travel to a school or any booking of more than three or four people, a deposit is required to hold the date, because that is a reserved block of time rather than a single appointment. Tell me roughly how many people you expect and I will quote it.

What is an FD-258 card?

It is the standard fingerprint card the FBI issues, and the format most federal and out-of-state agencies expect. It is filled out with your identifying information and rolled in ink, then mailed to the agency or to an approved channeler. I carry official FBI FD-258 cards.

Can I just do Live Scan instead?

Only if the agency requesting the check is a California agency set up to receive Live Scan results. Federal, out-of-state, and foreign requests almost always need ink on a physical card. Confirm with the requesting agency before booking.

How many cards should I get?

Two, unless your instructions say otherwise. Agencies commonly want a duplicate, and if one card is rejected for print quality the spare saves you an entire round trip.

How long does the appointment take?

Usually 15 to 20 minutes for one person, most of which is filling in the card details correctly. That is where a large share of rejections come from.
